The change of animal biometrics (body mass and body size) can reveal important information about their living environment as well as determine the survival potential and reproductive success of individuals and thus the persistence of populations. However, weighing individuals like marine turtles in the field presents important logistical difficulties. In this context, estimating body mass based on body size is a crucial issue. Furthermore, the determinants of the variability of the parameters for this relationship can provide information about the quality of the environment and the manner in which individuals exploit the available resources. This is of particular importance in young individuals which growth quality might be a determinant of adult fitness.... |

The objective of this work was to determine the genetic differences among eight Brazilian populations of the tomato leafminer Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), from the states of Espírito Santo (Santa Tereza), Goiás (Goianápolis), Minas Gerais (Uberlândia and Viçosa), Pernambuco (Camocim de São Félix), Rio de Janeiro (São João da Barra) and São Paulo (Paulínia and Sumaré), using the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique. Fifteen combinations of EcoRI and MseI primers were used to assess divergence among populations. The data were analyzed using unweighted pair-group method, based on arithmetic averages (UPGMA) bootstrap analysis and principal coordinate analysis. Using a multilocus approach, these populations were... |

The anaconda Eunectes murinus (Linnaeus, 1758) inhabits large hydrographic basins in tropical America and figures among the world's largest snakes, attaining a length of 12 m. This study analyzed the growth of three female anaconda siblings, with records from their birth in captivity up to around 14 months of age. The snakes were kept in a controlled environment with constant temperature and data related to biometry, feeding and skin shedding were recorded. At the end of these 445 days, the siblings had grown on average 2.6 times their initial length and increased their initial weight by 3830.lOg, incorporating about 43.5% of total food ingested to their body mass. They showed a total of 0.69 skin sheddings per month in that period, and did not exhibit... |

Along biometric characteristics, glass eel otoliths were collected during three migration seasons, in the Adour estuary, during the new moon of January. Microstructure reading and measurements of various growth zones bring information on glass eel larval life during their oceanic migration and the transition phase in estuary. The results show significant inter-annual variations of glass eels otolithometric characteristics from the point of view of their typology as of the various growth zones measured during transoceanic migration. The differences observed between the years on the typology level could be related to very fluctuating environmental conditions during recruitment. The differences in measurements carried out on the registered otolith zones would... |

The objective of this work was to estimate the repeatability of adaptability and stability parameters of common bean between years, within each biennium from 2003 to 2012, in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Grain yield data from trials of value for cultivation and use common bean were analyzed. Grain yield, ecovalence, regression coefficient, and coefficient of determination were estimated considering location and sowing season per year, within each biennium. Subsequently, a analysis of variance these estimates was carried out, and repeatability was estimated in the biennia. Repeatability estimate for grain yield in most of the biennia was relatively high, but for ecovalence and regression coefficient it was null or of small magnitude, which indicates that... |

The morphology, biometry and shape indices of the left and right sagittal otoliths were studied for sharpsnout seabream, Diplodus puntazzo species from Aegean Sea. The shape, sulcus acusticus shape, proximal and distal surfaces, anterior and posterior regions of left and right sagittal otoliths for a total of 52 D. puntazzo were analyzed. The morphometric measurements such as weight, length, width, area and perimeter were recorded for each pair of sagittal otoliths of the sharpsnout seabream. The shape indices such as form factor, roundness, aspect ratio, circularity, rectangularity, and ellipticity were calculated for left and right sagittal otoliths of D. puntazzo. The otolith width and ellipticity were significantly different (P <0.05) for left and... |
